Apple — Siri and AI/ML — Trevor McNaughton case study
1. Effective October 2017, the init.ai team (6 people) has been integrated into the Siri and AI/ML organization. Trevor McNaughton will join as a designer within the AI/ML group, working on Siri across ████████████████ platforms.
2. Primary areas of responsibility will include design for intelligent assistant experiences across iOS, macOS, watchOS, and HomePod. The role requires working across multiple modalities: screen-forward interfaces, voice-forward interactions, visual UI, and no-visual-UI contexts. Maintaining consistency and coherence between these modalities is a core design challenge - the assistant needs to feel like the same intelligence whether you're looking at a screen or talking to a speaker.
3. A significant portion of the work will involve contributing to a cross-platform design system that accounts for ██████████████ interaction patterns across devices with fundamentally different input and output capabilities. The system must scale from ██████ watch to ██████ TV, from touch to voice to ████████████████████████.
4. Additional focus on future product exploration and prototyping for ██████████████████████████████████████. This work is forward-looking and involves designing interactions for ██████████████████████████████████████████ that ██████████████████████████████████████████████████████. Details remain classified under ████████████████.
5. Prior experience with conversational AI and NLU systems is directly applicable to current Siri development efforts. The work shipped across ████████████████ product launches, reaching over one billion devices. Specific features and contributions include ██████████████████████████, ██████████████████████, and ██████████████████████████████.
6. Duration of assignment: approximately five (5) years. During this period, the scope expanded from Siri-specific design to broader AI/ML experience design, including ████████████████████████████████████████ and ██████████████████████████████████████████████████.
7. All intellectual property, design artifacts, prototypes, and research produced during the assignment remain the property of Apple Inc. and are subject to the terms of the confidentiality agreement.
8. Upon departure in 2022, McNaughton noted:
"I learned what it means to design at a scale where your decisions affect a billion people. The hardest part was making something feel simple when the system underneath is ████████████████████████. I am ready for another zero to one problem."
